XL Winners!

November 23rd, 2010 by Ian in Links for students, News

Vicky, Jemma, Julia, Ian, Patrick, Joe and Leah all went to Bristol’s Old Vic theatre last week to see Kenny be awarded the Educational Achiever of the Year award in the Prince’s Trust Celebrate Success (South West) ceremony. It was a big event and we are all very proud of Kenny’s achievement which was completely deserved (even though as it came as quite a surprise to him). Vicky also earned a much deserved certificate as Kenny’s ‘Champion’.

Kenny now goes on to the National Awards in London next year.

Ofsted!

November 23rd, 2010 by Ian in News

It’s been so busy here we completely forget to tell you about our Ofsted inspection! How could we? We were quite nervous going in because although we know that we’ve improved in every way in the time since our previous inspection, in the words of Ofsted itself, “the goal posts have been moved’. We’re judged using the same criteria as mainstream schools and this makes it very tough. All the advice we had been getting was telling us that the most we could hope for was a judgement that we were ‘satisfactory’. So you can imagine how please we were to be graded as…

GOOD

Ofsted described as a caring centre, which is what we always strive to be. We were rated as outstanding for the effectiveness of our care, guidance and support; for safeguarding; for the effectiveness of our partnership work; and for the effectiveness of our engagement with parents and carers.

We’d like you to read the whole report as it says lots of nice things about us. It’s available as a pdf file here.

Best ever exam results!

September 7th, 2010 by Ian in Links for students, News

Welcome back everyone. We’re coming back this year with our best ever exam results! All our students, past and present, should be proud of what they’ve achieved. My Year 9 and Year 10 students passed Design and Technology, most with a grade C. Of last year’s Year 11 students,

65% achieved 5 or more passes at grades A* to G and

20% achieved 5 or more passes at grades A* to C.

This is fantastic and shows just what is possible with a little hard work!

Easter Fair 2010

May 10th, 2010 by Ian in Links for students, News

The Prince’s Trust group ran a successful Easter Fair despite the weather on the last day of term. The group put together lots of stalls including face painting, cake stall and a raffle. They also held mini competitions such as the easter colouring competition and name the rabbit.

The group had to make a group decision earlier in the day to cancel the egg hunt due to the weather, so they bagged up the eggs and gave them away to all the children who attended. We had a good show of support from the local community, who gave lots of

positive feedback concerning our students putting on the fair and the work done by all our students displayed in the classrooms.

Overall we raised £78.33 to put towards community projects and the residential trip.

A big thank you to ………………………….

XL group :- Emily S, Bronwyn, Patrick, Natalie.

Volunteers :- Julia, Jane, Jemma, Fran, Andrew and Ian (official event photographer)

JJ Stores :- for a very generous donation of goodies.

Welcome back to the new year everyone!

We’ve had a busy but very productive and positive start. I’m sure this is going to be a great year for Sherborne Learning Centre and all our students.

End of the year!

July 17th, 2009 by Ian in curriculum, Links for students, News

It’s been a busy term and everyone’s worked very very hard. I want to take this opportunity to thank all the staff who have put so much effort into making Sherborne Learning Centre what it is. Our students this year have produced some amazing work, only a small proportion of which is here on the website.

I’d also like to thank Phil for all the posts he’s made to the website showing the amazing work he’s helped our students produce.

We’ve now got a lovely long summer break ahead of us so I’d like to wish everyone – staff, students, their families and all the professionals and agencies who work with us – a relaxing, safe and fun holiday.

Please click the read-more link below to see our end of term film. It’s a long download but completely worth it. The music is by Emily, a star in the making.

Red Nose Day

March 28th, 2009 by Ian in Links for students, News

Friday 13 March was Red Nose Day and we had a variety of activities to raise money for this great event.

We started the day with a walk and then had a Ready Steady Cook competition. In afternoon we had a quiz.

Overall we raised £48.70. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to Becki for organising it.
